Pope Welcomed by D.C.-Area Muslims

Along with hundreds of other faith groups, the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) welcomed Pope Benedict XVI upon his arrival to Washington D.C. on April 15. This is the first time a Pope has visited the United States in nine years, and Catholics and those of other faiths alike have been eager to welcome him to American soil.

ADAMS bid welcome to the pope as a member of the Fairfax County, Virginia’s Faith Communities in Action network, a group of more than 600 faith communities that brings people of different religious backgrounds together for interfaith dialogue. The organization commended the pontiff’s initiative to gather representatives of major world religions to discuss shared concerns while he visited the capital city.

Representatives of ADAMS also participated in an interfaith gathering with Pope Benedict and gave him the gift of a small Qu’ran, bound in green leather with gold leafing. It was presented by Saman Hussain, a graduate of the University of Virginia where she majored in religious studies and foreign affairs. She was also the leader of the school’s Muslim Student Association.
