Auburn Seminary Honors Muslim Civil Rights Leader

Farhana Khera, president and executive director of Muslim Advocates and the National Association of Muslim Lawyers, was honored with Auburn Seminary’s “Lives of Commitment” award in New York City on April 14. Her fellow recipients were former lieutenant governor and professor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Barbara Friedman, the first woman to chair the board of governors of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

Auburn Seminary’s Lives of Commitment Breakfast is a multifaith, intergenerational event honoring women whose lives demonstrate a powerful commitment to the common good. This event is a window into Auburn’s work across lines of religious difference to create a more peaceful and just society.

Khera, one of One Nation’s expert commentators, is an advocate for civil rights for all Americans. Recognized by Islamica Magazine as one of “10 Young Muslim Visionaries,” Khera served as Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in the area of the Constitution and civil rights, focusing on issues of civil liberties and racial and religious profiling. Previously she worked with two Washington, D.C. law firms earning recognition from the legal community for her contributions to civil rights and urban affairs.
