Web Site On American Muslim Experience Wins Webby Award

Defining Middle Ground, a multimedia Web site that explores the Muslim-American experience in New York, recently won a prestigious 2008 Webby Award for Best Student Website. The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. Winners are chosen by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a global organization of industry experts. The site is the brainchild of three 2007 graduates from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, Tara Kyle, Bilal Qureshi and Ahmed Shihab-Eldin.

An estimated 600,000 Muslims currently live in New York City. The Web site’s creators felt it was important to share opinions of American Muslims, especially as they have become targets of increased scrutiny in their communities. Defining Middle Ground is divided into four sections: crossing cultures, civic engagements, art and activism and hijab. Each area of the site features video, photographs and audio interviews with American Muslims who share their personal views on politics, prejudice and integration.

The site features video interviews with visual artist Asma Shikoh, rapper Miss Understood, as well as students from the On Track for Peace program, which brings together Muslim and non-Muslim students from New York high schools to share their experiences and foster mutual understanding.
