PBS Broadcasts Film About Muslim Prince in America

Prince Among Slaves follows the journey of Prince Abdul Rahman, who was enslaved in Africa and brought to America. After serving and enriching his owner for 40 years, Rahman eventually negotiated his own freedom and secured his return to Africa. He did so by spreading his story throughout the U.S., eventually gaining celebrity status and befriending powerful men like American President John Adams.

This emotionally compelling documentary is an important part of American history that sheds light on a rarely explored topic in our history: the early origins of Islam in America. During Black History Month, we’re used to recalling the legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and other memorable civil rights leaders. Prince Among Slaves is a tale of the American spirit, with a twist on the classic American story about the power of religious pluralism, faith and the need to persevere.

Narrated by hip hop legend Mos Def and directed by Alex Kronemer, Prince Among Slaves will premier February 4 on PBS, heralding one of the first mainstream documentaries to focus on the earliest examples of Islam in America among African Americans.
