A Son’s Sacrifice tells the story of Imran, a young man of mixed Puerto Rican-Bangladeshi heritage struggling to take over his father’s neighborhood slaughterhouse in New York City. As a Muslim American, he must confront the challenges his diverse identity brings in gaining acceptance from his father’s traditional Muslim community. In this 30-minute short film, Imran leads a sacrifice on one of Islam’s holiest days that will ultimately determine whether he earns the respects he seeks.
The film will air on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens, hosted by actor Terrence Howard, January 25, 2008. Check your local PBS listings for times.
A Son’s Sacrifice was produced by a Muslim-Jewish team of first-time filmmakers, Yoni Brooks and Musa Syeed, and won Best Documentary Short at the Tribeca Film Festival.
