On Monday, August 26, Reps. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and Andre Carson, D-Ind., co-hosted an event for the first meeting of the American Muslim Democratic Caucus during the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. The event honored the 50 Muslim-American Delegates and alternates attending the convention and emphasized the growing political influence of American Muslims. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and other political leaders also spoke at the event.
In his opening remarks, Representative Ellison said, "America, our great country, needs the Muslim community," he said. "The fact is we have achieved an amazing success simply convening this meeting."
Both Reps. Ellison and Carson encouraged Muslim Americans to increase their political involvement by voting, participating in local politics and running for political office.
The American Muslim Democratic Caucus is a group of grassroots activists from all over the nation that are working to be active members of the National Democratic Party, by holding voter registrations and political empowerment trainings to help American Muslims participate in the political process to serve the country.
