One Nation experts are available to comment on President Obama’s first speech as president in a Muslim-majority country yesterday. Obama used the speech before the Turkish parliament as an opportunity to reach out to Muslims worldwide, stating that “the United States is not, and never will be, at war with Islam.” He also stressed the need for broader engagement with the Muslim world, based on mutual respect and mutual interests.

Obama also gave a nod to the contributions of American Muslims to his own country and pointed out that many non-Muslim Americans, like himself, "have Muslims in their family, or have lived in a Muslim-majority country."

One Nation experts available for comment include: Dr. Jen’nan Ghazal Read, Carnegie Scholar and Associate Professor of Sociology at Duke University; Soumaya Khalifa, Executive Director of the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta and Jana El Horr, International Peacebuilding Fellow at the American Islamic Congress.

October 24, 2008
Former Sec. of State Colin Powell’s appearance on “Meet the Press” last Sunday (October 19) has sparked a national discussion on the role that religion, race, and ethnicity have played in the presidential election. Citing the service and sacrifice of Cpl. Kareem Khan – an American Muslim soldier killed in 2007 while serving in Iraq -- he strongly urged voters and politician alike to uphold America’s respect for religious pluralism by challenging bigotry and prejudice aimed at minority communities including American Muslims.

Media commentators and newspapers including the New York Time’s Maureen Dowd and Washington Post’s editorial board strongly echoed these sentiments and urged inclusion and respect for all in confronting America’s most pressing challenges.

March 2, 2009
In the first-ever nationally representative study of a randomly-selected sample of American Muslims, Gallup reveals that Muslim women are among the most educated female religious groups in the U.S., second only to American Jews. Muslim-Americans: A National Portrait includes a number of other noteworthy findings, including that:
  • Muslim women are at least as likely as Muslim men to hold a college or postgraduate degree
  • Muslims have a greater level of economic gender parity of any group studied
  • American Muslim women are as likely as Muslim men to say they hold a professional job
  • American Muslim women are equally as likely as men to say they attend mosque at least once a week, which stands in sharp contrast to the trend seen in some predominantly Muslim countries where women are generally less likely than men to report attending a religious service in the last week

One Nation experts available for comment include: Jamillah Karim, author of American Muslim Women: Negotiating Race, Class, and Gender within the Ummah and assistant professor in religion at Spelman College; Farhana Khera, president and executive director of Muslim Advocates, a national legal advocacy organization and Ani Zonneveld, co-founder and board chair of Muslims for Progressive Values.

A Gallup poll of more than 50,000 Muslims in 35 nations found that the vast majority want Western democracy and freedoms, but do not want them to be imposed. Most wanted the West to instead focus on changing its negative view of Muslims and Islam. The poll shows that the overwhelming majority of Muslims condemned the attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001 and other subsequent terrorist attacks. It will be published next month as part of a book entitled “Who Speaks For Islam? What A Billion Muslims Really Think” by One Nation Experts John Esposito and Dalia Mogahed.
