Scholarship Fund Addresses Lack of Am. Muslims in Liberal Arts

In 2006, the Islamic Scholarship Fund was created to recognize the need for Muslims to have a stronger voice in America.  They realized that a majority of Muslim students were majoring in technical or medical fields, which presented an under-representation in the fields of humanities, social sciences and liberal arts.

ISF was founded as a 501 C (3) non-profit organization to encourage Muslim students in the United States to pursue college and post graduate degrees in humanities, social sciences and liberal arts.

The fund provides annual $1,000-$10,000 scholarships for higher education in these fields, which Somayeh Nikooei, Director of Operation for the Islamic Scholarship Fund, hopes will address this shortage.

Scholarships are awarded to Muslim students who have been accepted by top-ranked four-year colleges and universities and who meet ISF’s minimum eligibility requirements.  Scholarships are generally awarded at the end of July for next fall’s semester.

ISF also engages other Muslim organization to administer its scholarship program on a local level, both in terms of fundraising and selecting scholarship recipients. Nikooei hopes that this scholarship will help foster a better understanding of the Islamic faith and those who practice it.
