U.S. Muslims Hold Gala for Obama Inauguration

Muslims from across the U.S. gathered on Jan. 19 at the Thurgood Marshall Center in the nation's capital to celebrate the inauguration of America’s 44th president, Barack Obama.

The gala, which was titled the "Muslim Inauguration Celebration," drew over 200 attendees including Congresspersons, Congressional staffers, community leaders, artists and students. Organizers say the event was intended to not only celebrate the era of a new president, but also highlight the historic nature of the inauguration of America's first African American president.

The honorary host of the gala was the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association, a Congressionally chartered organization founded in 2006 that connects Capitol Hill staffers and employees and assists American Muslims interested in public service.

Other host organizations included the Washington Academic Leadership Institute and the Muslim Social Network.
