Muslims Celebrate Thanksgiving by Giving Back

Muslim Chicagoans are celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday with lots of turkey – except the turkey isn’t for them, but for low-income families on the city’s Southside.

On Monday, local American Muslim community members donated more than 500 turkeys to the families of students attending Emmett Till Elementary School. With 98 percent of the school’s student population under the poverty line, this donation helps ensure that families who would not otherwise have a Thanksgiving turkey meal, have one this holiday. Local Muslims raised $7,000 over the past few months to purchase the frozen turkeys and arrange for the Monday delivery.

Dr. Jihad Shoshara, a local pediatrician, who was the main organizer of the turkey drive and distribution, told reporters that he organized this charitable drive and turkey giveaway to help Chicagoland Muslims connect with and give back to other parts of the city’s community and help Muslims live out the charitable principles and precepts found in the Islamic faith.
