Two American Muslim Students Win Rhodes Scholarship

Abdulrahman El-Sayed and Aisha Saad are two of the 32 newest American recipients of the Rhodes scholarship, a prestigious two-to three-year academic stipend. The scholarship allows highly recognized scholars pursuing graduate studies the opportunity to study at Oxford University in England.

The two were selected from a pool of 769 applicants nominated by 207 universities from across the country. The scholars will enter Oxford University beginning in the fall of 2009.

The two American Muslim students and their American counterparts will join an international group of Rhodes Scholars selected from 13 other jurisdictions around the world. Around 80 scholars are selected each year.

El Sayed, who is currently enrolled in a joint MD/PhD program at the University of Michigan, will pursue a master's degree in global health science during his time at Oxford. He was praised by former Pres. Bill Clinton after delivering the University of Michigan's 2007 student commencement speech as a hope for global religious understanding.

Saad, currently a senior studying environmental health science and Spanish at the University of North Carolina, will pursue her master's degree in nature, society, and environmental policy. Saad was born in Cairo and immigrated to the U.S. when she was 6 years old. She has published scholarly articles in two major medical and health journals and has been instrumental at her university in facilitating interfaith dialogue between Muslim students and people of different faiths.
