U.S. House Passes Ramadan Recognition Resolution

By a vote of 376-0, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an historic resolution on October 2, 2007 that recognizes the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and expresses the “deepest respect to Muslims in the United States and throughout the world.” Introduced by Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), the resolution was co-sponsored by 30 legislators, including Representative Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim in Congress. Ellison told the USINFO news service that as a nation of religious tolerance and religious inclusion, this sign of respect and recognition was a “very American thing to do.”

Representative Johnson said that the American Muslim community contributes to the vibrant growth of American society and culture. “Muslim Americans play a significant role in our nation’s political process, economic growth, scientific development, free enterprise, religious tolerance, law enforcement and homeland security,” said Representative Johnson, according to USINFO.
