A Muslims around the country will break the Ramadan fast with the new documentary film "Allah Made Me Funny: Live in Concert," which opens October 3. Constructed around the standup routines of three of the nation’s most celebrated Muslim comedians, Allah Made Me Funny spearheads the newest generation of comedy that is quintessentially American.
Azhar Usman, Mohammad Amer and Preacher Moss will take you on a hilarious journey through an America that many people never see. In this historic film — the first independent Muslim comedy film to be released in theaters — the comics stand on the shoulders of great comedians like Eddie Murphy and Jerry Seinfeld, who opened up worlds of American cultural life to brand new audiences.
"This film embodies a level of humor and truth that transcends religious affiliation," said Preacher Moss, founder of the comedy troupe. "Being a Muslim in America comes with its joys and struggles, and it’s constantly complicated. I think comedy is the best language to use to talk about sensitive issues, and we are ready to start this conversation with the world."
The comedians' material comes directly from their experiences as American Muslims. Whether it's inviting the audience to write the joke on airport security themselves, or sheepishly admitting that four wives would be three too many, the trio gets the audience laughing so hard, they're neither afraid nor offended. The film is based on the comedians' live tour of the same name, which has been traveling the world to great praise since 2004.
The film, produced by Unity Productions Foundation, will run in the following cities, Oct. 3-10: Atlanta, Berkeley, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis
