What's New in the American Muslim Community

Encyclopedia Covers Islam in the U.S.

Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn Cesari, Harvard University’s Islam in the West Program has produced the Encyclopedia of Islam in the United States. The text allows students and other readers to familiarize themselves with the elements of Islamic tradition, including holidays and beliefs, and covers the history of Islam in the United States, which can be tracked back to Thomas Jefferson.

The encyclopedia provides A-to-Z descriptions and includes primary and contemporary sources so that both the origins and American expressions of Islam are clear and accessible for all readers. The entries were compiled and written by a host of scholars, primarily from Harvard University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies. The encyclopedia was published by Greenwood Press in September 2007.

Dr. Cesari is an associate at the Center and teaches at the Harvard Divinity School. Her areas of expertise include Islam and globalization, Muslim minorities in Europe and America, and Islam and politics in North Africa. Her most recent books are When Islam and Democracy Meet: Muslims in Europe and in the United States (Palgrave 2006) and European Muslims and the Secular State (Ashgate 2005).
