Founded in 2008, Patheos.com is a premier online destination to engage in the global dialogue about religion and spirituality and to explore and experience the world's beliefs.
According to the Pew Internet Project, more than 82 million Americans and 64 percent of all Internet users utilize the Web for faith-related matters. The importance of religion and spirituality coupled with the growing use of the Internet for religious matters, point to the ongoing need for an online resource for religious and spiritual engagement and dialogue. Patheos fulfills this need.
A unique part of the site is the Public Square. In the Public Square section, each week there will be a new social issue or topic raised (e.g., abortion, same-sex marriage, environmental stewardship, etc.) and experts from 10 different religions will offer their perspectives. The idea is that site visitors can consider a topic from multiple perspectives and gain a better understanding of where their own and other traditions stand and the reasoning behind each position.
The current Public Square topic is "Religion on the Web." Aside from articles and commentary, Patheos provides "snapshots" of graphs and charts that show current research that is being completed on this topic. One of the "snapshots" from this week is about Christians in America:
Next week’s Public Square topic is "Same Sex Marriage".
